Zanzibar declares June 17 a public holiday to celebrate the Islamic New Year

ZANZIBAR: THE President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has declared Wednesday, June 17, 2026, a public holiday in Zanzibar to mark and celebrate the Islamic New Year 1448 Hijri.

The announcement was made on June 15, 2026, at State House Zanzibar as part of the government’s decision to recognize the Islamic New Year as one of the important national observances in Zanzibar.

In his statement, President Mwinyi said the holiday would provide an opportunity for citizens, particularly Muslims, to welcome the new year through prayers, worship, and acts of goodwill, while asking Almighty God to continue blessing Zanzibar and Tanzania with peace, unity, and prosperity.

He also urged citizens to use the occasion as a time for self-reflection, spiritual renewal, and the promotion of positive values that contribute to building a cohesive and harmonious society.

President Mwinyi further called upon government institutions, private sector organizations, employers, and the general public to observe the holiday in accordance with the established regulations and procedures.

He concluded by wishing Muslims and all citizens a happy Islamic New Year 1448 Hijri, praying that it would be a year filled with blessings, peace, good health, and development for all.
