Zanzibar boasts with new Obstacle Sports introduction

ZANZIBAR is set to embrace Obstacle Sports Adventure Racing, thanks to an exciting new initiative led by Laura Bjorn.

The Creative Education Foundation Zanzibar (CEFZ) volunteer and founder of ‘Kimbia Bila Shaka’ and Zanzi Half Marathon is preparing to introduce the dynamic sport, beginning at the junior level.

Laura, who recently participated in the inaugural Officiating Level 1 Obstacle Sports Adventure Racing Training in Tanzania, highlighted her plans to launch the sport in Zanzibar.

The training, organised by Scope Event and led by Nayibe Statia from the World Obstacle Technical Officiating Committee, aimed to develop top athletes capable of showcasing Tanzania on the global stage.

Laura is eager to start implementing her plans at local schools and potentially in the spice farm area, utilising available space and trails for obstacle racing facilities.

She believes that introducing this sport will engage youth and provide new opportunities for personal and national growth.

“The potential to grow obstacle racing in Zanzibar is immense,” Laura said.

“This sport not only offers diverse outdoor exercise but also helps in mastering new techniques.

I’m optimistic that Zanzibar can produce athletes who might represent Tanzania at the Olympics and bring home medals.”

Laura also emphasised the role of Steiner Waldorf Primary School in fostering creativity and critical thinking among children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

She believes that obstacle sports align well with the school’s curriculum, promoting curiosity and providing a pathway out of poverty through education and employability.

“Our secondary school continues this development, preparing students to lead their communities towards a brighter future,” Laura added.
