Zanzibar banks on TDB funding for Mangapwani Port, housing and energy projects

ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR President, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, said his government is continuing to explore new and affordable sources of financing to implement major strategic projects and accelerate the development of Zanzibar.
Dr Mwinyi made the remarks today, August 10, 2026, when he met the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Trade and Development Bank (TDB), Admassu Tadesse, and his delegation at the Zanzibar House in Unguja.
He said Zanzibar intends to utilise various financing mechanisms to expand investment opportunities in key strategic projects, including the Mangapwani Integrated Port, energy, housing, oil and gas, as well as social and economic development projects.
Dr Mwinyi stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation between the government, international financial institutions and the private sector to ensure Zanzibar secures affordable capital to finance its development priorities.
He said access to affordable financing was crucial to accelerating the implementation of major projects aimed at stimulating investment, expanding economic activity and improving the livelihoods of citizens.

For his part, Mr Admassu Tadesse assured the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar of TDB’s readiness to continue working closely with the government to facilitate productive projects.
He said the bank could support Zanzibar through various financing mechanisms, including project preparation financing, investment financing and affordable capital.D
TDB expressed its readiness to work with the Zanzibar government in identifying and facilitating financing mechanisms that can support the implementation of strategic projects and expand investment opportunities across various sectors.
The partnership is expected to strengthen Zanzibar’s access to capital for major infrastructure projects and sectors that drive economic growth, while expanding the role of financial institutions and the private sector in the Zanzibar development agenda.
