Yas expands 5G network to Masasi

MTWARA: Yas Tanzania has launched a new 5G tower in Masasi District, Mtwara Region, in a move expected to improve internet connectivity, support business growth and expand access to digital services across southern Tanzania.

The investment forms part of the company’s broader network expansion strategy to strengthen the country’s digital infrastructure and extend high-speed internet services to underserved communities.

Speaking during the launch, Yas Head of the Southern Region, Ms Fadhila Saidi, said the project is designed to bridge the digital divide while supporting economic development.

“This 5G tower will ensure residents of Masasi and surrounding areas have access to faster and more reliable communication services. Improved connectivity is essential for driving business growth, innovation and access to vital services,” she said.

Ms Saidi said Masasi District, home to more than 315,000 people whose livelihoods largely depend on agriculture and trade, stands to benefit significantly from enhanced connectivity. Farmers will be able to access real-time market information, while traders can broaden their customer base through digital platforms and mobile payment services.

She added that the upgraded network will create new opportunities for young people through digital learning and entrepreneurship, while schools, health facilities and other public institutions will benefit from improved communication and service delivery.

Ms Saidi also highlighted the role of Mixx by Yas in advancing financial inclusion, noting that the platform enables users to send and receive money, pay bills and conduct digital transactions efficiently, helping to expand participation in the digital economy.

Local entrepreneur Mr Jaffari Wadi welcomed the investment, saying faster internet would improve business operations and unlock new opportunities.
