Yanga, Gamondi in contract extension talks

DAR ES SALAAM: YOUNG Africans are in contract extension talks with Argentine tactician, Miguel Gamondi.

Yanga Vice-President Arafat Haji unveiled that yesterday, saying that the club leadership is confident that Gamondi will stay to serve the club for the unpredictable future.

His comments came following the expiration of Gamondi’s one-year contract with the club on Sunday (June 2nd) immediately after guiding his side to lift the CRDB Bank Federation Cup at the New Amaan Complex in Zanzibar.

Speaking yesterday in Dar es Salaam, Haji unveiled that their on-discussion table with the coach for his contract extension and talks are unfolding well for the benefit of the two sides.

“Discussions with him started a long time, and we were waiting for the season to end so that we can proceed with the talks in peace of mind.

“Of course, we are all satisfied with what the coach has achieved for our club in the just-ended season 2023/24, he has quenched our expectations and we are sincerely happy about that.

“He has not only succeeded in retaining the major titles for the club but also he has managed to bring a desirable quality football to the team which is exciting,” Haji said.

He further pointed out that Gamondi excelled in giving Yanga the 2023/24 season’s league title with 80 points from 30 matches, not forgetting another record of having many goals (71).

“Our President (Hersi Said) recently disclosed that we are expecting to win the Premier League title for other five years consecutively and that is why we are looking forward to being with Gamondi for a long time. “For the next five years, we are expecting that Yanga fans will continue to be excited, as we are prepared to continue dominating the country’s football as champions of all time,” he disclosed.

However, after the thrilling 6-5 post-match victory against Azam in the CRDB Bank Federation Cup final, Gamondi admitted that his contract expired on the day.

“I cannot comment about next season, because my contract expired today (last Sunday) as such, we are going to discuss it with the management but in the meantime, I need time to rest,” he said.

Apart from doing well domestically, the Argentine trainer excelled in orchestrating Yanga into the knockout phase of the CAF Champions League (CAF CL), only to be eliminated by Mamelodi Sundowns (2-3) on post-match spotkicks.
