Yanga face KVZ in Union Super League today

ZANZIBAR: YOUNG Africans will face Zanzibar’s KVZ FC today in the quarter-finals of the Union Super League at Gombani Stadium in Pemba, Zanzibar.

The winner of the match will advance to face Zimamoto FC, who secured their place in the semi-finals yesterday by defeating Coastal Union 1-0, thanks to a 28th-minute goal from Rashid Salum.

Yanga, returning to the tournament after more than 20 years without winning the trophy, has a rich history, having won the title six times in 1983, 1987, 1991, 1996, 1997 and 2000.

They have arrived with a full-strength squad, including key midfielder Pacome Zouzoua, who missed a Premier League match due to an injury sustained in a clash against Azam FC.

Zouzoua is one of the 25 players currently in Zanzibar for the tournament.

KVZ heads into the match hoping to make a strong statement. They carry the memory of a 2-0 defeat against Simba SC in last year’s edition of the tournament, which took place at the New Amaan Complex in Unguja.

The Union Super League was previously halted in 2003 and made its return last year, when Simba SC clinched the title with a 1-0 victory over Azam FC in the final at Amaan Complex
