Yakubu: Learn to preserve cultural heritage

THE Secretary General of the Ministry of Culture, Arts, and Sports, Said Yakubu, has urged Tanzanians to learn from China how to preserve the cultural heritage.

Speaking at a brief ceremony in Dar es Salaam to celebrate the Dragon Boat Racing Festival held at the China Cultural Centre, Yakubu highlighted the need for Tanzanians to learn from the Chinese in actively passing down their cultural traditions to the younger generation.

“China has imparted knowledge on various aspects of their culture to Tanzania, such as the art of making Chinese tea, creating drawings with profound messages, and preparing patterned rice dishes. We shall have the positive impacts of teaching Tanzanian youths to appreciate and uphold their own cultural heritage.” said Yakubu.

“The collaboration between Tanzania and China holds a historical significance, as cultural groups from both countries have frequently exchanged visits. We also have the plans for Tanzanian experts to travel to China soon to learn about effective management of the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium,” he said.

He concluded by stating that the collaboration between China and Tanzania is not only focused on the economic aspect but also extends to culture and sports. Inviting each other to events like these greatly contributes to strengthening the overall relationship between our two countries. We continue to enhance our cooperation with China in various fields, including culture and sports.

To his side the Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania, Chen Mingjian, said the Dragon Boat Festival, celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, is an ancient holiday deeply rooted in Chinese culture.

“The festival embodies traditional astronomy and human philosophy, reflecting the rich and diverse social and cultural life of Chinese ancestors. The cultural significance of tea consumption for its health benefits and mental tranquillity. The global influence of Chinese tea culture, which emphasises the use of natural ingredients instead of sugar.” Said Mingjian

“The Dragon Boat Festival is rich in customs. Chinese festivals always encompass numerous cultural activities, brimming with beautiful emotions. Not only can we taste delicious zongzi, but we can also experience the joy of wrapping zongzi by hand, immersing ourselves in an authentic Chinese Dragon Boat Festival experience.” Mingjian Noted.
