WWF environmental campaign keeps Coast region green

DAR ES SALAAM: THE government has called on Tanzanian youth to seriously engage in environmental conservation, which is vital to creating a healthier world.

The call also wants the youth, including students, to become good ambassadors for environmental conservation by planting more trees in their schools.

The Kisarawe District Commissioner, Petro Magoti, made these remarks during the launch of the ‘Ishi Kijanja’ campaign at Jokate Mwegelo School in the Pwani Region.

The campaign, initiated by the World Wide Fund (WWF) aims to raise awareness of environmental protection. Magoti commended WWF for handing over two clean cooking stoves, each with a capacity of 200 liters. The goal is for 80 percent of Tanzanians to use clean cooking energy by 2034, which is part of the broader effort to promote sustainable energy solutions.

“We appreciate our partners for their important support, as well as the government’s efforts, under President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, to plant trees for environmental protection and safeguard the future for generations to come.

Additionally, the handover of the cooking stove is support the clean energy campaign, which aims to help every Tanzanian move away from harmful energy sources,” he said.

As part of the government’s ongoing efforts to develop the education sector, Magoti introduced two new teachers to the school, one specializing in science and the other in business studies.

On behalf of the WWF, Director Yohanna Mpagama mentioned that they have been collaborating with the school on tree planting initiatives for the past three years.

He added that the organisation would continue to work with the school on environmental conservation efforts, as well as promoting the use of clean energy throughout the country.

In recognition of the students’ excellent academic performance, the government presented them with rewards, which included 100 kilograms of rice, crates of soda, and potatoes.

These prizes are intended to motivate the students to continue excelling in their studies while also ensuring they have essential resources for their well-being at school.

The planting trees campaign aligns with Tanzania’s broader environmental and energy goals, including planting millions of trees as part of efforts to combat climate change, reduce deforestation, and preserve biodiversity.

The collaboration between WWF and local schools is a significant step in fostering environmental consciousness among the youth, who will be key to ensuring a sustainable future
