World Bank President lands in Tanzania for African Energy Summit

DAR ES SALAAM – The President of the World Bank (WBG), Mr. Ajay Banga, has arrived in Tanzania to attend the African Heads of State on Energy Summit popularly known as “Mission 300.” The meeting will be held on January 27 and 28 at the Julius Nyerere International Conference Center (JNICC), in Dar es Salaam.
Mr. Banga was welcomed at Julius Nyerere International Airport by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cosato Chumi,, along with senior leaders including the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, Dr. Natu Mwamba, Ambassador of Tanzania in the United States, Dr. Elsie Kanza, and the Resident Representative of the World Bank, Mr. Nathan Belete.
The Energy Summit aims to bring together African Heads of State and important stakeholders in the financial sector to provide secure, affordable, and sustainable access to energy to 300 million people by 2030.
The World Bank has been a key partner in energy projects in Africa, involving grid expansion, renewable energy development, and policy support that enhances private sector participation. The main goal is communities that are not reached by energy services.
Apart from Mr. Banga, other leaders who arrived are the President of Sierra Leone, Mr. Julius Maada Bio, and the President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Dr. Akinwumi Adesina.
This meeting is expected to approve the Africa Energy Compact, sign National Energy Plans for the First Phase (2025-2030), and adopt the Dar es Salaam Declaration on Energy, which involves 14 countries, including Tanzania, DRC , Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, and Senegal.
