Why making the first move still matters

  • Sometimes the biggest obstacle to love is not rejection, it is never trying.

DAR ES SALAAM: THERE is something interesting happening in today’s dating world. Many young people say they want genuine relationships, yet making the first move has become more difficult than ever.

Spend a few minutes listening to conversations among friends and you will hear familiar stories. “I liked her, but I never approached her.”

“I thought he wasn’t interested.” “We followed each other online for months, but no one said anything.” Some of what could have become meaningful relationships ends before they even begin— not because two people were incompatible, but because fear spoke louder than courage.

For many young men, approaching a woman today can feel intimidating. They worry about saying the wrong thing, being embarrassed in front of friends or facing rejection.

Some choose silence because it feels safer. But confidence has never meant having the perfect words. Sometimes confidence simply means introducing yourself respectfully and accepting whatever response comes with maturity.

The healthiest relationships rarely begin with expensive gifts or dramatic declarations of love. They often start with a simple conversation. A genuine greeting. A shared laugh. A question asked with respect.

At the same time, pursuing someone should never mean chasing someone who has already said no. Respect remains attractive because it recognises another person’s comfort and choice.

Young women, too, face their own challenges. Many appreciate honesty more than games.

Clear intentions often create more trust than mixed signals, endless texting without direction or pretending not to care.

A compliment delivered respectfully can brighten someone’s day. A conversation built on curiosity creates connection. Kindness leaves a lasting impression.

Social media has changed how people meet, but it has also created a strange habit of watching from a distance. Someone can admire another person’s photos for months, react to every story and still never introduce themselves properly.

A heart emoji is not always a conversation. Real connection still grows best through genuine communication.

Of course, not every attempt will lead to romance. Rejection is part of life, and it does not define a person’s worth.

The ability to hear “no” gracefully is just as important as the courage to ask in the first place. In fact, handling rejection with dignity says more about someone’s character than winning someone’s attention.

For those already in relationships, this lesson still matters. Pursuing your partner should not stop after saying “yes” to each other.

Small compliments, thoughtful messages, unexpected dates and taking time to listen keep affection alive long after the excitement of the first conversation fades.

Love is not built by perfect people. It is built by people willing to be honest, respectful and brave enough to connect.

Perhaps the next meaningful relationship will not begin with a grand gesture. Perhaps it will begin with something beautifully simple. “Hello.”
