Why Bunge honours Samia

DODOMA: THE Parliament yesterday presented a special Honorary Award to President Samia Suluhu Hassan as a gesture of profound appreciation for her exceptional contributions to the nation’s development over the past four years.

The special Honorary Award symbolises recognition of the Head of State’s unparalleled contribution to the nation’s development in both economic and social-political aspects. Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr Tulia Ackson, said that the special Honorary Award symbolises recognition of President Samia’s unmatched contribution to the nation’s development.

“We are proud of your four-year leadership that has reflected good governance, professionalism, accountability, integrity and inclusivity. You have been a role model in strengthening legal systems, human rights and transparency, ensuring equality and development for every citizen,” she said.

Dr Ackson praised President Samia for her visionary and competent leadership, describing her as a model of national service whose efforts have significantly improved lives across various sectors.

She said the honour, bestowed on her on behalf of all the members of Parliament, symbolises their collective recognition and respect for the President’s achievements.

“Under President Samia’s stewardship, Tanzania has undergone significant transformation,” she said.

She added: “Fellow Tanzanians, today we celebrate a leader whose governance has been a model of integrity, transparency and equality. President Samia has championed the strengthening of legal systems, human rights and inclusive development that leaves no citizen behind.”

She underscored that members of Parliament have witnessed tangible progress across a range of sectors under President Samia’s leadership.

According to the Speaker, the award is a reflection of the Legislature’s deep appreciation for the Head of State who continues to inspire confidence and drive national advancement.

“This is not just a ceremony; it is a moment to acknowledge leadership that listens, reforms and delivers. We believe President Samia will remain a guiding light for the future of our nation,” she added.

The Speaker highlighted the historic successes and transformative changes witnessed by Parliament under President Samia’s leadership, which have brought productivity and prosperity to the entire community.

Under President Samia’s leadership, the education sector has seen significant expansion, including increased higher education budgets and the provision of loans to diploma students in science, health and technical fields, aiming to build a knowledgeable and skilled nation.

The mining sector has also experienced substantial growth in revenue and attracted both domestic and foreign investors, leading to an increase in government revenue from 624.61bn/- to 753.82bn/-, a 20.7 per cent rise from 2021 to 2024.

On Union matters, the Speaker said that the Head of State has managed to strengthen the Union and that a total of 15 Contentious Union matters have been resolved in the past four years.

She said President Samia has also strengthened the relationship between the ministries in the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania and that of Zanzibar Revolutionary Government, which are not under the Union.

Dr Ackson said President Samia has led transformative reforms in the education sector, recognising its critical role in shaping the nation’s future.

From curriculum updates to infrastructure expansion, she said her administration has made considerable progress in improving access, enhancing quality and ensuring that education meets the needs of the labour market.

Dr Ackson added that the government under President Samia’s leadership has increased education budget and allocated more fund for Higher Learning Students’ Loan Board (HLSLB).

On agriculture, the Speaker said that President Samia has made significant progress in the sector by encouraging greater public participation in farming and attracting more investors.

She noted that the government has increased the agriculture budget, improved infrastructure and created an enabling environment for Tanzanian farmers to thrive.

The Speaker also stressed that the President has achieved notable successes not only in agriculture but also in health, water, infrastructure and several other key sectors
