VPO commends Samia for being appointed GCA member
DODOMA: VICE President’s office has congratulated President Samia Suluhu Hassan for being appointed as a Member of the Advisory Board of the Global Centre on Adaptation (GCA), a vital world’s body that fosters climate change resilience for human wellbeing.
The appointment is in recognition of President Samia’s outstanding leadership, competence and efforts to address climate change in Africa and worldwide, where Tanzania has been the front runner in implementing various climate restoration projects.
Minister of State, Vice President Office (Union and Environment), Dr Selemani Jafo made the remarks here yesterday while speaking to journalists ahead of the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer which is marked today.
Dr Jafo said as Tanzania joins the rest of the world to mark the day, the Vice President’s Office commends President Samia for the appointment, which sprang from her efforts in the fight against climate change.
“For three consecutive years at national and international conferences related to environment, President Samia has been an exemplary leader in terms of managing climate change issues,” he said.
He said Tanzania under the leadership of President Samia has distinguished itself in the whole issues of combating climate change, especially by implementing strategic projects that deal with climate change.
“Dr Samia’s government has distinguished itself in terms of combating climate change by implementing a modern railway project, rapid transit in the Dar es Salaam Region, Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP), natural gas project and others which support climate change in the agricultural sector,” he said.
“We thank and congratulate President Samia. As we mark the day, we have something to be proud of, especially to the President of Tanzania, Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan,” he said.
Commenting on the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer celebration with the theme of Montreal Protocol: Fixing the Ozone Layer and Reducing Climate Change, Dr Jafo, said the government through the Vice President’s Office in collaboration with environment stakeholders will carry out various activities including educating the public.
He said in this year’s celebrations, the government has planned to continue providing education to the public on the importance of protecting the ozone layer and continuing to encourage the community to reduce various human activities that affect the climate.
He said they will also educate the Journalists’ Environmental Association of Tanzania (JET) and Editors on the importance of protecting the ozone layer and provide training to Custom Officers and Law Enforcement Officers presented at the Dar es Salaam Port and the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere International Airport on how to control the importation of chemicals and equipment containing chemicals controlled by the Protocol.
Equally, Dr Jafo urged the citizens to participate in preserving the ozone layer and reducing the effects of climate change by avoiding importing banned gases and devices that use remit gases such as used refrigerators and air conditioners.
“Also buy products with the official logo known as Ozone friendly logo or low global warming potential.”
Dr Jafo has also urged citizens to avoid throwing away old refrigerators or fire extinguishers containing chemicals that deplete the ozone layer or cause global warming.
