WINDHOEK, NAMIBIA: VICE President Dr Philip Mpango has arrived in Windhoek, Namibia, where he will represent President Samia Suluhu Hassan at the National Mourning and Memorial Service for the late Dr Sam Nujoma, Namibia’s first president.
Dr Nujoma, a key figure in Namibia’s three-decade struggle for independence from apartheid South Africa, passed away on February 9, 2025, at the age of 95.
The Office of the President announced that Nujoma died while receiving treatment at a hospital in Windhoek.
The former SWAPO leader had been hospitalized for three weeks before succumbing to an illness, according to Namibian President, Nangolo Mbumba.
“With great sorrow and deep sadness, we announce the passing of our revered freedom fighter and revolutionary leader,” said President Mbumba in a statement.
“Our Founding Father lived a long and impactful life, serving his beloved nation in an exceptional manner,” he added.

Dr Nujoma stepped down as Namibia’s president in 2005, peacefully transferring power to his successor, Hifikepunye Pohamba. He later resigned as SWAPO chairman in 2007.

His National Memorial Service will be held at Independence Stadium in Windhoek on Friday, followed by his burial at Heroes’ Acre Cemetery on March 1, 2025.
Namibia gained independence in 1990, with Nujoma winning the country’s first democratic election that same year.
