Vijana Queens fall short as WBLA Zone 5 qualifiers conclude

ZANZIBAR: AS the Women’s Basketball League Africa (WBLA) Zone 5 Qualifiers tournament wraps up today after five days of intense competition, Tanzania’s Vijana Queens fell short of expectations.

Tanzania’s hopes for representation in the WBLA were largely pinned on Vijana Queens after Fox Divas struggled in the group stage and failed to advance.

However, in their quarterfinal matchup on Thursday evening at the New Amaan Indoor Stadium in Zanzibar, Vijana Queens faced a formidable challenge from Al Ahly Sporting Club, who had previously defeated them in the group phase.

Al Ahly once again showcased their dominance, overpowering Vijana Queens with a decisive 130-47 victory, adding to their earlier win of 145-52. This result marks a disappointing end for the Tanzanian side in the tournament.

The quarter scores highlighted Al Ahly’s control: 42-16 in the first quarter, followed by 32-11, 23-14 and 33-6 in the subsequent periods.

Today, Vijana Queens will compete against Ethiopia’s Gladiators for the 7th-8th place classification after their defeat by the Kenyan Equity Bank Hawks, who won 92-46 yesterday.
