TANZANIA: THE US Acting Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, John Bass has commenced a six-day visit to Chad and Tanzania aimed at strengthening diplomatic ties and addressing key regional issues.
In Chad, Under Secretary Bass will engage in consultations with senior Chadian leaders to bolster bilateral cooperation, provide humanitarian aid to refugees, address the humanitarian crisis in Sudan and coordinate on regional security initiatives.
Upon arriving in Tanzania, Under Secretary Bass is scheduled to meet with senior government officials to discuss avenues for enhanced bilateral cooperation, advancements in political and economic reforms, human rights issues, and regional peace and security matters.
His itinerary also includes engagements with civil society leaders to explore Tanzania’s democratic trajectory.

Mr. Bass, a career Senior Foreign Service officer, assumed the role of Acting Under Secretary for Political Affairs after being confirmed by the US Senate on December 17, 2021. His diplomatic career spans over three decades, with notable assignments including Senior Advisor at the Foreign Service Institute, US Ambassador to Afghanistan, Turkey, and Georgia, among others.
Born and raised in upstate New York, Mr. Bass is a graduate of Syracuse University and is fluent in Italian and French. He has received multiple awards for his service at the State Department.
