DAR ES SALAAM: AS Tanzania prepares for its Local Government Election slated for November 27, the government has called on the Tanzania Editors Forum (TEF) to maintain high standards of professionalism in journalism.
The call was made during the 8th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the TEF held in Dar es Salaam, where key government officials emphasised the importance of fair, accurate and responsible reporting in the lead-up to the elections.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister for Information, Communication and Information Technology, Jerry Silaa, the Ministry’s Deputy Permanent Secretary, Nicholaus Mkapa, emphasised the critical role of journalists in ensuring a peaceful electoral process.
He stated that editors and reporters must prioritise balanced and truthful reporting, free from bias, especially as the nation heads into elections for local government positions.
“As journalists, you must ensure that you provide accurate and reliable information as we approach the local government elections. You also have a responsibility to promote peace through your writing and broadcasting,” Mr Mkapa said.
Mr Mkapa also highlighted the ongoing efforts by the ministry to review the state of the media industry in Tanzania. He pointed out that the ministry is working on the economic viability of media outlets in the country, describing the initiative as vital for the sustainability of the sector.
“We are in the process of revising media policies to establish better frameworks for the media sector’s growth and development. These efforts are crucial for the overall progress of the nation,” Mkapa added.
The Deputy Permanent Secretary also conveyed apologies from Minister Jerry Silaa, who was unable to attend the event due to other commitments.
TEF Chairman Deodatus Balile, in his address, assured the government that the forum was committed to working closely with the state for the advancement of the country. He echoed that media professionals were ready to collaborate with the government in promoting development.
“As journalists in this country, we are ready to ensure strong cooperation with the government to continue advancing the development of our nation,” Balile stated.
