Upgraded transport industry earns Tanzania 12tri/- through customs duties

DAR ES SALAAM: PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has said that major improvements undertaken in the transport sector have brought positive transformation in the performance of the country’s ports, enabling them to receive and service large vessels operating in major international ports.

Addressing hundreds of Dar es Salaam residents gathered during the laying of the foundation stone for the Oil Receiving and 15 Storage Tanks Construction Project at the Port of Dar es Salaam, Kigamboni, Dr Samia said the investment will increase efficiency in cargo loading and unloading services, positioning Tanzania as a key trade and transport hub in the East and Central African region.

As a result of these achievements, government revenue from customs duties has increased to over 12tri/-, enhancing the government’s capacity to finance development projects and strengthening the national economy.

Additionally, the President noted that the involvement of the private sector in port operations has been a strategic move to boost efficiency and reduce operational costs for the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA).

According to the President, through the model, TPA has managed to reduce the burden of direct operational expenses and redirect efforts toward investment in new infrastructure.

Among the ongoing projects is the construction of modern oil offloading and storage infrastructure. Before this project, TPA did not own its own oil receiving and storage tanks.

Upon completion, the project will enable the government to own and operate its own tanks, thereby enhancing energy security, reducing leasing costs, and ensuring that fuel storage meets international standards.

Additionally, President Samia emphasized that the pace of development in the port sector has significantly accelerated compared to previous years, and that the implementation of development plans toward Vision 2050 is progressing successfully through close collaboration between the government and the private sector.
