Upanga SC ready to host cricket legends today

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Upanga Sports Club is set to host an exciting event today, as part of the Cricket Legends Reunion of Tanzania that brings together cricket icons from abroad as well as local players.

The special event will be held a day before the Reunion’s second tour that is scheduled to take place from tomorrow to Sunday in Dar es Salaam and Bagamoyo.

Dinesh Vaishnav, a senior administrator for the Reunion Cricket Legends of Tanzania and one of the coordinators for team Tanzania, told the ‘Daily News’ in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday that the cricket legends will meet with sports leaders and cricketers during a fellowship dinner organised by the Upanga Sports Club.

“On Friday (tomorrow), we will officially welcome the legends at the Patel Brotherhood / Patel Samaj (PBPS) during a special event celebrating the PBPS Cricket Festival,” Vaishnav stated.

Kanu Rathod, the Group Lead of Cricket Legends, arrived in Dar es Salaam on October 19 from Birmingham, UK, to finalise preparations for the event.

Rathod expressed excitement about the reunion being held in Dar es Salaam for the second time.

“It’s going to be a stimulating event, bringing together legends and young cricketers with a shared passion for the game. We hope to inspire the next generation of cricketers,” Rathod said.

Upanga Club Vice Chairman, Babula Chudasama, expressed anticipation for the arrival of the cricket legends.

“We have sent out invitations for the reunion event on October 24 at Upanga Club and we eagerly await their presence on a memorable night,” Chudasama said.

Vaishnav confirmed that all arrangements are in place for the official kickoff of the tour on Friday, which aims to spread joy, love and smiles among participants.

This reunion marks the second tour since over 37 legendary cricketers living abroad gathered with their local counterparts for the PBPS Cricket Festival held in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar in October 2022.

The refreshed ideas according to organisers coming from Tanzania Cricket Association (TCA) chairman Balakrishan Sreekumar and support for the PBPS led by Harish Patel, encouraged group leaders to organise the event once again. This initiative also serves to promote sports tourism in the country.
