Ulega orders TANROADS to priotise emergency projects

DODOMA: MINISTER for Works Abdallah Ulega has directed the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) to work around the clock to complete emergency projects under its supervision.

Minister Ulega issued the directives during a meeting with TANROADS management and regional managers from across the country in Dodoma on Friday. He said emergency projects must be prioritised and implemented without delay.

“Work swiftly, day and night, especially on urgent projects to help Tanzanians overcome the challenges caused by damaged infrastructure,” Ulega said.

He told the managers to work at a pace similar to the rapid execution of a task seen when the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) are tasked with government projects, as the upcoming rains could worsen already damaged areas.

Ulega highlighted that the roads damaged by heavy seasonal rains, combined with the effects of El Niño, have caused major disruptions, halting economic activities. “It is, therefore, crucial to address these issues urgently,” he insisted.

The Dodoma meeting marked Ulega’s first interaction with TANROADS leaders since his appointment by President Samia Suluhu Hassan earlier this month to head the docket.

During the meeting, the minister commended TANROADS staff for their hard work and professionalism.

He noted that, under President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s leadership, over 1,198 kilometres of road have been successfully upgraded to tarmac  level.

Mr Ulega urged the managers to approach their work with confidence and professionalism.

The minister also called on the regional managers to ensure that high-traffic areas, especially in cities and municipalities, are well-planned and designed to meet both current and future needs to reduce congestion and enable citizens to carry out their activities efficiently.

On her part, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Works, Eng Aisha Amour, assured that TANROADS will continue to prioritise the construction and maintenance of major roads, regional roads and bridges to ensure they remain passable throughout the year.

She also urged TANROADS managers to enhance project management, protect road reserves and improve urban areas with street lights and environmental conservation along roadways.
