Ulega orders Prisons to address case-related challenges, reduce over crowding

DODOMA: THE Minister for Constitution and Legal Affairs Abdallah Ulega has directed authorities to continue inspecting remand facilities and prisons across the country to identify and address case-related challenges, reduce overcrowding and ensure eligible suspects are granted bail in accordance with the law.
Ulega issued the directive during an introductory meeting at the National Prosecutions Office in Njedengwa, Dodoma, where he emphasised the implementation of recommendations made by the Chande Commission and directives from senior government leaders, including President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
He said the inspections should be conducted promptly and efficiently nationwide to identify factors contributing to overcrowding in remand facilities, monitor the progress of suspects’ cases and ensure appropriate action is taken in accordance with the law.

In a separate development, Ulega welcomed the increase in staff at the National Prosecutions Office from 630 to 1,200. However, he stressed that the expansion should be accompanied by improved professionalism, speed and efficiency in carrying out the office’s responsibilities to strengthen the administration of justice in the country.
He further called on public education units to intensify efforts to educate citizens about bail, including the legal requirements and procedures governing its granting, as well as the rights of suspects.
