UDSM lecturer commends govt for advancing education infrastructure

MAGU, MWANZA: THE University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) Assistant Lecturer, Mr Amos Kiyungi, has praised the Sixth Phase Government, led by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, for its efforts in enhancing education infrastructure and investing in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) studies.

Mr Kiyungi made the remarks yesterday in Magu district during the opening of the 2024 Joseph & Mary Secondary Schools Scientific Exhibition, organised by the non-governmental organisation – Mainsprings Tanzania.

He said President Samia’s initiative to prioritise education, particularly in science subjects, will enable the country to produce more experts in the field, thereby boosting the nation’s economy.

“By encouraging girls to pursue STEM careers, the country promotes gender equality and ensures it taps into its full population potential to drive innovation and development”, he explained.

According to Mr Kiyungi, science exhibitions provide more than just a platform for students to showcase their projects but they foster creativity and innovative thinking.

“Participating in these exhibitions encourages students to apply their creativity and think innovatively”, he said.

He called upon his fellow lecturers, scientists and researchers to actively engage in such exhibitions, stressing the importance of building strong connections between secondary schools and higher learning institutions such as the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) and Ifakara Health Institute (IHI).

He praised schools like Mainsprings and Joseph & Mary for contributing to the field of science by hosting annual exhibitions, which bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world scientific research.

“These events expose students to STEM, providing opportunities to innovate, engage with complex concepts and go beyond textbook learning”, he said.

Kitongo Primary School Campus Director, Mr Daniel Ojala, echoed Kiyungi’s sentiments and urged parents to create a conducive environment for their children to study science early on.

Mr Ojala said Mainsprings Tanzania, under which Joseph and Mary School operates, has developed strategic plans to strengthen the science exhibitions for primary and secondary students.
