TANZANIA U-19 Women’s team maintained the unbeaten run after thrashing Malawi by 98 runs in the ICC T20 World Cup Africa qualifiers at Botswana Cricket Association’s oval 1 in Gaborone on Wednesday.
The impressive Tanzanian ladies won the toss and chose to bat. The Tanzanian envoy stunned Malawi with 141 runs in 20 allocated overs.
Apart from registering that considerable margin, Tanzania saw Rahima Kibwana scoring 42 runs from 44 balls, Agnes Qwele recording 22 runs from 27 balls, while Sonia Muya collected three wickets from Euless Chiralile, Febbe Malafula and Monica Ndipo.
Sheila Kizito was another Tanzanian lady who pocketed three wickets from Alinafe Alfonso, Sungeni Kananji and Linda Ziyenda. Malawi came to bat second but failed to meet the target of Tanzania. However, they recorded 43 runs in the 20 overs.
Alinafe Alfonso, Sophina Chinawa, Monica Ndipo and Ketrina Chingaipe were among the few Malawian ladies who showed quality in their performance.
For instance, Alfonso scored 15 runs from 28 balls, Chaniwa and Ndipo collected three wickets each, and Chingaipe bagged two wickets. Since these qualifier games commenced, Tanzanian ladies have destroyed Mozambique on an opening day by nine wickets and then pulverized Nigeria by 115 runs.
In the first encounter, Mozambique U19s Women won the toss, opted to bat, and registered 19 runs in 10 of the 20 overs. However, Tanzania managed to chase the target in one over after they bagged 20 runs in an over.

In the encounter, Nigeria U-19 Women won the toss, electing to bowl, and Tanzania, who batted first, registered hefty 174 runs in 20 allocated overs. The Nigeria side failed to meet the target of Tanzanian ladies as they posted 59 runs in 19 overs.
Tanzania, therefore, commanded its group after securing wins in two games they played. Rwanda U19s Women follow on the table after their nine runs win against Nigeria and Malawi by 145 runs. Malawi U19 Women are third with one win in three games. They have only won against Mozambique by eight wickets.
Nigeria are fourth with one win against Mozambique by nine wickets while losing two other games. Mozambique are tailing at the bottom of the table, losing all three games they have played. Nine teams contest for the slot to the world.
The qualifier games for Africa are split into two groups. Group A includes Tanzania, Rwanda, Nigeria, Malawi, and Mozambique, while Group B consists of the host Botswana, Uganda, Namibia, and Sierra Leone.
The top two from each group will go into the semi-finals before the winner of the final and then celebrate a ticket to the World Cup proper in South Africa. Thus, nine African teams battle it out to be the 16th team to book their tickets to the 2023 tournament hosted by South Africa.
They will join fellow qualifiers Indonesia, Scotland, UAE, and the USA in securing the spots that were left open to regional qualifiers.
