DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA kicks off its campaign in the ICC Men’s U19 World Cup Africa Division 2 Qualifier today, taking on Nigeria in the opening match at Gymkhana Oval, Dar es Salaam.
The Division 2 Qualifier, hosted by Tanzania, features eight teams competing for three spots in the ICC Men’s U19 World Cup Africa Qualifier Division 1.
The tournament will span eight days, with teams from Botswana, Ghana, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone and Tanzania vying in 16 matches at Dar Gymkhana and the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM).
In Group B, Tanzania will play against Nigeria, Ghana and Mozambique. This group is expected to be fiercely competitive, with each team eager to secure their spot in the next round.

Speaking with the ‘Daily News,’ the Assistant coach of Tanzania, Salum Jumbe, emphasised the team’s readiness and the advantage of playing on home turf.
“We have the home ground advantage. Hopefully, this time around we will perform better and make our nation proud,” Jumbe said. He also reiterated the team’s goal of progressing to Division 1, highlighting their preparation and the talent of the young players.
Tanzania’s team captain, Laksh Bakrania, who has gained valuable experience from playing with the senior team, also shared his optimism.
“The aim is to qualify, as we have the home advantage. We won’t let you down this time around,” Bakrania stated in an interview with the ‘Daily News.’ His leadership and experience are expected to play a key role in the upcoming match.
Rwanda’s Head Coach, Laurance Mahatnana, provided insight into the broader regional context, noting the growing talent in East Africa.
“East Africa has a lot of talent and we are looking forward to growing bigger and bigger over the next couple of years,” Mahatnana remarked.
As the tournament progresses, the match between Tanzania and Nigeria is expected to be a highlight, with both teams aiming to make a strong impression.
The outcome will be crucial in determining their chances of advancing to the ICC Men’s U19 World Cup Africa Qualifier in 2025.
