TZ joins global leaders at ministerial summit on patient safety

METRO MANILA: TANZANIA is participating in the seventh Global Ministerial Summit on Patient Safety, a key international event that brought together leaders from 27 countries to discuss and shape the future of patient safety.

The summit that began yesterday, is scheduled to conclude today at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Headquarters in Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila, Philippines.

Representing the country, the Director of Medical Services at the Ministry of Health, Dr Hamad Nyembea is standing in for the Minister Health, Ms Jenista Mhagama.

He is accompanied by an international health expert, Dr Witness Mchwampaka. The summit’s main objective is to advance global efforts to enhance healthcare quality and safeguard patients worldwide.

This year’s theme; ‘Weaving Strength for the Future of Patient Safety Throughout the Healthcare Continuum’, has guided discussions around critical topics such as patient engagement, addressing climate change’s impact on patient safety and strengthening all levels of healthcare as a foundation for patient safety.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Global Ministerial Summits on Patient Safety have played a crucial role in raising awareness and driving the global patient safety movement.

A major outcome from previous summits was the adoption of the WHO resolution (WHA72.6) in May 2019, which laid the foundation for the Global Patient Safety Action Plan 2021-2030.

The plan offers a strategic framework for stakeholders to support patient safety worldwide.

The summit also highlights the progress made in implementing the Global Patient Safety Action Plan and discusses key milestones to ensure that patient safety becomes a fundamental pillar of resilient, people-centred and equitable health systems.

The approach is essential for delivering high-quality care and improving health outcomes globally.

The seventh Global Ministerial Summit on Patient Safety was organised by the Department of Health of the Republic of the Philippines and co-sponsored by the WHO.

It served as a platform for sharing knowledge, discussing best practices and exploring effective strategies to address the challenges in patient safety.

The summit gathered leaders, experts and stakeholders from 27 countries, including Tanzania, Eswatini, Micronesia, Gambia, Jamaica, Maldives, Papua New Guinea, Tajikistan, Tuvalu, Angola, Cambodia, Chinese Taipei, Fiji, Georgia, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, Kenya, Libya, Mongolia, Panama, Russia, Slovakia, South Sudan, TimorLeste, Zimbabwe and the United Kingdom.
