Two killed in Rukwa road carnage

TWO people were killed instantly when a saloon car, make Toyota Sienta, rammed into a power tiller and veered off the road at Ntatumbila village in Nkasi District Rukwa Region.

Rukwa Regional Police Commander (RPC) Ms Theophista Mallya told the ‘Daily News’ on phone interview on Sunday. Ntatumbila village is along the Sumbawanga – Mpanda Highway.

She identified the deceased persons as a driver of the ill- fated car Joseph Lazaro, nicknamed Lucas (27) and a student from Saint Bakhita Health Science College, Maiko Mkambi (25)

“The ill-fated car was carrying two people and both of them died on the spot. Their bodies have been preserved at Nkasi District Designated Hospital in Namanyere Township.

RPC said that the accident occurred at around 10:05 pm at Ntatumbila village, saying the car was heading to Namanyere Township from Sumbawanga Town.

It involved a car the Toyota Sienta with registration number T 544 DVV,  which collided with a power till which was parked beside the road.

“The cause of the road carnage was reckless on the part of the driver, who was  speeding and failed to negotiate a sharp corner and rammed onto a stationed power tiller and subsequently veered off the road,” she explained the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Ms Mallya.

The regional police boss asked the public to observe traffic regulations and laws to avoid road accidents which have been claiming innocent lives.

However, the RPC directed to deregister a licence of any driver who will cause any casualties due to reckless driving.
