Twiga Minerals contribution to economy wins PM recognition

Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has commended the partnership between the government and Barrick Gold Corporation, Twiga Minerals, for its positive impact on the economy and bringing about a revolution in mining operations in the country.

The PM made the remarks when closing the international platform on mining sector investment held in Dar es Salaam at the weekend.

“Your contribution through the mining sector to people’s development particularly in areas surrounding your investment is valuable and worth of praise,” he said.

Speaking during the meeting,  Barrick Gold Corporation Manager, Melkiory Ngido said since 2019, Barrick Gold Corporation has transformed the two gold mines of North Mara and Bulyanhulu to be of international standards.

He said also in the period under review, through the joint venture company has contributed over 3.0 billion US dollars to the economy.

This year, Twiga Minerals was recognised as the largest taxpayer among companies in which the government owns a stake.

He said also that Barrick spends 84 per cent of its budget on expenditure by engaging local companies whereby 96 of its workforce are Tanzanians.

Furthermore, Mr Ngido told the gathering that through corporate social investments, the company has spent over 13 million US dollars on implementing various community development projects on education, health and water.
