Tribute: The part of a Tanzanian former President and the loss of Ali Hassan Mwinyi

TANZANIA: The world is one of perpetual farewells; the hands that clasp in kind greetings now are destined to come together again when the trembling lips utter the word, Goodbye.
As the protagonists in his tale were about to part ways and most likely never to see each other again, this is what eighteenth-century Scottish novelist R. M. Ballantyne wrote.
When Ballantyne’s sad statements are further studied, it becomes clear that the author is warning us about our mortality and the fact that nothing in this world, including life, lasts forever. The English playwright William Shakespeare expressed it more concisely when he said, I quote.
“Life is but a passing shadow, a meek performer who struts and frets for an hour on stage before disappearing from view. It is a story told by a fool, full of rage and noise, and it means nothing”. William Shakespeare Parting is probably one of the most painful things that we as humans endure, especially the loss of people so attached, so dear, so loving, so precious, so dynamic, so valuable, people whose contribution to our country in specific vital sectors and devoted family man, is immeasurable and so was the Ali Hassan Mwinyi, 8th May 1925-29th February 2024.
As we continue to remember the late former President Ali Hassan Mwinyi, aka Mzee Ruksa, we honour a known humble man whose significant contributions over many years in his career from 1963 starting with Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education of Zanzibar to 1985-1995 as President and later as a Chairman of the ruling party (CCM), quietly and strategically shaped the course of part of our country’s progress in sectors especially opening up many aspects of economy hence termed as Mzee Ruksa, that unlocked Tanzania economy by taking austeric measures, it will take many years to forget.
Tanzania has experienced a remarkable national development, but underneath the spotlight are now acknowledged heroes who, by their quiet devotion, set the groundwork for future greatness and, above all, serve as a lesson to others, remembering one of his speeches saying, when you have gone you need to leave behind, not only a story but a good story.
Ali Hassan Mwinyi was more than simply a Tanzanian, a man of wisdom; he was a visionary and a dynamic force who had a lasting impression on the public office environment in Tanzania and will continue to teach Tanzanians and many within the region what it means to be a leader.
Throughout his career in the office, his dedication to building relationships between people in leadership roles and those being led by entities throughout Tanzania propelled him into the remarkable highest career as president from 1985 to 1995.
Ali Hassan Mwinyi’s legacy was ingrained in the fabric of a more cohesive and prosperous governing environment in Isles and mainland Tanzania, ranging from historic accords between government public offices, in the party, as Ambassador to his crucial role in leading and promoting good governance in the ruling party from 1990 to 1996, to name just a few.
In Tanzania’s August parliament, Ali Hassan Mwinyi enthusiastically represented his constituent. His simultaneous roles in the public office, in the party and as ambassador demonstrated his unrelenting commitment to its advancement as a real Tanzanian and a channel for being willing to see the consequence of what he was accountable for supervising as a leader.
The projects and economic reforms he championed cleared the path for a time when Tanzanians who share his vision will be connected in ways never seen before, creating a sense of oneness that cuts across regional boundaries.
To me, Ali Hassan Mwinyi’s influence goes beyond the boardrooms of political parties. I remember his words of wisdom in many of his speeches and insights from his book, all signalling how transformative he was during his presidency from 1985 to 1995, guiding Tanzania through a period of significant economic changes aimed to liberalise and revitalise Tanzania’s economy.
Those lucky enough to spend time with him were delighted by his contagious warmth, genuine laughter, and, most importantly, calmness, especially in listening before acting.
He had an infectious optimism in the face of adversity, reminding us that even lofty goals start with humble, modest steps. I remember a particularly moving exchange during a complex debate over unlocking the economy of Tanzania when going through a challenging period of making tough decisions to help kick-start Tanzania’s economy when Ali Hassan Mwinyi related a story from his early years about making bridges out of sticks and stones.
Although not many could have heard this tale, it embodies his philosophy of life, motivates us, and inspires us to keep going and advancing. Consider these precious moments and the lasting influence of his work and vision in Tanzania during this collective loss.
While we grieve the loss of an exceptional person of his time in Tanzanian history, let us also honour the inventive and cooperative legacy that former President Ali Hassan Mwinyi has left behind. Let us be inspired to move on and carry on the crucial job he led by his memory.
His contagious laugh, keenness and unwavering energy, including encouraging us to exercise will always remain a part of our hearts, motivating us to continue upholding the high stanards he established, mainly when granted leadership positions in public institutions and public office.
Let’s honour our previous former President, Ali Hassan Mwinyi by recognising the significant impact of this unsung hero and many others and by pledging to continue his goal of a prosperous and connected Tanzania, including taking up accountability when necessary.
Even though his life may have reached its earthly conclusion as a human being brought onto this planet by the all-powerful, almighty father, “GOD”, has come to an end, his influence is still. It will continue to be felt throughout our country.
Let us take comfort in the fact that his legacy endures and will continue to steer us towards a time when his aspirations for a united Tanzania and the spirit of hard work will come to pass on both a personal and a national level.
The surviving members of Ali Hassan Mwinyi’s family include his devoted widows, kids, and grandchildren. By his kindness and grace, may the Almighty bestow his mercy onto the soul of the late Ali Hassan Mwinyi, atone for his transgressions, grant him eternal rest in peace and continue to provide strength to his surviving family. RIP.
