TRC passes 264 freight wagons for SGR after test

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) has completed testing 264 Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) freight wagons, marking a significant step towards the commencement of freight transport on the modern railway.

According to TRC, the wagons arrived in the country in December 2024, and their testing was conducted under the Land Transport Regulatory Authority (LATRA) supervision. The process involved stability assessments both in stationary and moving conditions to ensure that all essential systems, including braking on curves, function properly.

Out of the 264 wagons tested, 200 are designed for container transportation, while 64 are intended for loose cargo. LATRA has confirmed that the wagons meet the required standards, with a maximum speed capacity of up to 120 kilometers per hour.

These wagons are part of a total of 1,430 wagons being manufactured by the Chinese company CRRC for Tanzania, as part of efforts to modernize the country’s freight transport sector through the SGR railway.

The completion of wagon testing signifies a major milestone in Tanzania’s railway development, aiming to enhance efficiency in cargo transportation and reduce reliance on road transport.

With the introduction of these new wagons, TRC expects to facilitate faster and more reliable freight movement, contributing to economic growth and trade expansion within the country and the region.
