TRA calls for concerted efforts in helping orphans

THE Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has appealed for concerted efforts to assist orphans because they have potential to perform well in their future lives.

The appeal was made by Mr Elisha Shigela, on behalf of the TRA Commissioner General, while delivering various donations including food items to the orphans based at the Uyacho Orphanage Centre, in Bukoba Municipal Council, on Wednesday.

“Each one of us should feel obliged to assist the orphaned children because they have potential to perform well in their future lives. With timely assistance the orphans could possibly become future leaders,” he remarked.

He commended the founder of Uyacho Orphanage Centre, Ms Saada Selemani (90), for her efforts to take care of the children thus supporting government in this noble task, also appealing to other NGOs and stakeholders to emulate the example.

Kagera Regional TRA Manager, Mr Charles Mkumbwa, explained that the donation worth 1.8m/- was made in celebrating the Taxpayers’ Week.

He listed the donated items including 300kgs of rice, 100 kgs of sugar. 100 kgs of beans, salt, washing soap and cooking oil.

He also pledged to pay an outstanding water bill amounting to 387,300/- on behalf of the orphanage.

Ms Selemani, on her part, thanked TRA officials for the timely assistance.

She cited some of the challenges facing the orphanage as lack of health insurance for the children, lack of reliable transport and school uniforms.

She explained that the orphanage was founded in 1997 and was registered in 1999 and to-date it has a total of 72 orphans including 46 girls and 26 boys.
