TPC registers historic sugar output

TPC Limited has produced over 100,000 tonnes of sugar a year for the first time since its inception almost 90 years ago.

The Moshi-based sugar producing firm said the production went up after introducing a new sugarcane harvesting system that led to an increase in its production from previous around 90,000 tonnes a year.

TPC’s Chief Executive Officer (Administration) Mr Jaffary Ally said they have harvested 1,150,000 tonnes of sugarcane which led to the production of 116,500 tonnes of sugar in nine months to March to set a record since it was established in 1936.

“This historical production was a result of the sugar harvesting equipment introduced recently with the capability of harvesting more than 200 tonnes of sugarcane per day”, he said when briefing Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner, Nurdin Babu, who visited TPC.

Mr Babu commended the TPC for production increase which will also led to more taxes to the government. The sugar producer last year paid some 90bn/- as various taxes.

Additionally, the RC said the production increase guarantees sugar availability during the annual rain season. Sugar factories normally close down during the rain season for maintenance.
