DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzania Paralympic Committee (TPC) is calling on Tanzanians to rally behind Hilmy Shawwal, who will represent the country at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

Scheduled to take place in Paris from August 28th to September 8th, the Games will feature 549 events across 22 sporting disciplines.

Shawwal, the sole Tanzanian athlete competing, will participate in the Wheelchair Racing T54 category, having earned his spot through a Wildcard entry.

TPC General Secretary, Vincent Kaduma, expressed confidence in Shawwal’s achievement and emphasised the importance of national support.

“Since he is the only athlete representing Tanzania, he deserves our full backing to excel in his competition,” Kaduma said.

Kaduma noted that Wheelchair Racing is not currently a developed sport in Tanzania.

Shawwal, who resides in England, has been actively competing in Wheelchair Racing events organised by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and has been registered under the Tanzanian flag.

“When he was selected for the Paralympic Games, Shawwal reached out to us for our endorsement and we are thrilled to support him,” Kaduma added.

Shawwal’s father, Faria Shawwal, also voiced confidence in his son’s capabilities. “Hilmy has competed in numerous international Wheelchair Racing events and has consistently shown determination and success,” he said.

“He never gives up and works tirelessly to achieve his goals, including winning medals at World Championships.”

The TPC and Shawwal’s family are optimistic that his participation will bring pride to Tanzania and they encourage the nation to support him as he competes on the global stage.
