TMA issues climate outlook for March-May Masika rainfall season

The Tanzania Meteorological Agency (TMA) on Wednesday issued a climate outlook for March – May ‘Masika’ rainfall season which show the likelihood of normal to below rains in most parts of the country.
The statement from TMA describes the evolution of the climate systems and outlook for the next three month’s rainfall season, advisories and early warnings to various weather sensitive sectors including agriculture and food security, livestock and fisheries, tourism and wildlife.

Others are transport, local authorities, energy, water and minerals, Health sector and disaster management.
The Masika rainfall season is specific to areas of the northeastern highlands (Arusha, Manyara and Kilimanjaro regions), northern coast Dar es Salaam, Pwani (including Mafia isles, Tanga regions, northern parts of Morogoro region, and Unguja and Pemba isles), Lake Victoria Basin (Kagera, Geita, Mwanza, Shinyanga, Simiyu and Mara regions) and the northern parts of Kigoma region.
According to TMA regions that are expected to receive normal to below normal rains includes Kagera,Geita, Mwanza, Shinyanga, Simiyu, Mara as well as most areas of Arusha, Manyara, Kilimanjaro and Tanga regions, together with Pemba Island.
However normal to above normal rains are anticipated over Dar es Salaam, Pwani including Mafia Island and northern parts of Morogoro region and Unguja Island.
“Normal to below normal rains may lead to insufficient soil moisture and water availability for agriculture activities and over the areas expected to receive normal to above normal rains, excessive soil is likely to occur and may affect the growth of crops that do not need a lot of water,” read the statement.
