Three-way title race tightens

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Mainland Premier League title race tightened as Young Africans and Simba ground out vital 1-0 victories in Dar es Salaam to maintain the pressure at the top of the table.

Young Africans edged past KMC at the KMC Complex to move onto 51 points, while Simba followed suit with a win over JKT Tanzania at the Major General Isamuhyo Stadium, taking their tally to 46 from 21 matches. Azam remain firmly in contention on 43 points, ensuring the championship battle is shaping into a closely fought three-horse race. With nine matches remaining, the run-in is beginning to take shape.

JKT Tanzania sit fifth on 32 points, just behind Singida Black Stars, with both sides still in contention for a top-four finish that would secure continental qualification.

At the other end of the table, KMC’s situation continues to deteriorate. They remain rooted to the bottom with just nine points from 21 matches, leaving serious concerns over their chances of retaining their top-flight status. At KMC Complex in Dar es Salaam, Young Africans secured a narrow 1–0 victory over bottomplaced KMC at the KMC Complex in Dar es Salaam yesterday, in what was largely a one-sided affair.

They dictated the tempo throughout, controlling possession and probing relentlessly for an opening. Despite the dominance, breaking down KMC’s defensive line proved extremely difficult. With numbers packed at the back, KMC’s defenders remained alert inside their box, repeatedly frustrating Young Africans’ attacking efforts.

That resilience forced Young Africans to vary their approach, opting for attempts from distance as they searched for a breakthrough. Allen Okello and Yao Kouassi both tested their luck from outside the area in the 50th and 61st minutes respectively, signalling a shift in attacking intent.

The pressure eventually told in the 65th minute when Shekhan Khamis delivered a well-timed assist to Okello, who fired a composed, low shot past goalkeeper, Ismail Mpank. The goal proved decisive, earning Young Africans all three points and taking their tally to 51.

At Major General Isamuhyo Stadium, Simba dominated possession for much of the match, while their opponents JKT Tanzania adopted a deep, low defensive block and looked to threaten on the counter-attack. However, Simba’s back line remained well organised, effectively nullifying any attempts to break through.

At the other end, unlocking JKT Tanzania’s defence proved a demanding task. Simba were forced to rely on patient build-up play, stringing together passes and occasionally attempting efforts from distance, particularly as JKT showed strength in dealing with crosses into the box.

The breakthrough came in the 53rd minute, when Clatous Chama finished off a well-worked move. Elie Mpanzu provided the assist, picking out Chama, who calmly drilled a low shot past JKT Tanzania goalkeeper, Ramadhani Chalamanda.

Meanwhile, Young Africans have parted ways with their head coach, Pedro Gonçalves. In an official statement, the club said: “The leadership of Young Africans Sports Club wishes to inform the public that it has dismissed the head coach of the first team, Pedro Gonçalves.

The club leadership extends its gratitude to Coach Pedro Gonçalves for his contribution during his time with us and wishes him the very best in his future endeavours. During this period, the team will be under the guidance of Coach Abdihamid Moalin together with Coach Patrick Mabedi until the end of the season.”
