Three students get ALAF sponsorship

With more support from stakeholders, the spread of Kiswahili to most parts of the world can be achieved sooner than expected.

This was said on Thursday by the University of Dar es Salaam Vice Chancellor (Academics), Professor Boniventure Rutinwa during a brief ceremony to hand out sponsorship to students taking Master’s Degree in Kiswahili.

He said that making sure Kiswahili language spreads far and wide is a national strategy, adding that as a higher learning institution, they are determined to make sure it succeeds.

UDSM received the sponsorship for three students from ALAF Limited, which is the fourth time, bringing the number of sponsored students to 12, including 9 who were sponsored in the first phase.

Speaking soon after the students received their dummy cheques, the VC said that it is their hope that more companies and institutions can come out and support the government effort of spreading Kiswahili.

“By realising the importance of the language, UDSM has three kinds of sponsorship to Kiswahili students, including the type provided by ALAF, the university providing 100 percent sponsorship to foreign students and fees reduction to foreign Kiswahili students,” he said.

Speaking soon after handing over the sponsorship, ALAF Limited General Manager, Paul Raj said that his company has been involved in sponsorship activities for four years now since 2016.

He said the aim of the sponsorship is to support the government’s strategy of ensuring the spread of Kiswahili inside and outside the country.

“Apart from supporting the government efforts, we all know that Kiswahili language has become a national treasure, therefore we feel obliged to take it upon ourselves to assist where we can,” he said.

Each of the three students received a 3.4m/ cheque.
