THRDC cherishes the SEACJF’s role in advancing Zanzibar judiciary system

ZANZIBAR: THE Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC) Zanzibar has said that hosting the General Meeting and Conference of the Southern and Eastern Africa Chief Justices Forum (SEACJF 2026) is among the outcomes of an assessment of the Zanzibar Judiciary conducted in 2022.
The conference, which began on October 5 and is scheduled to conclude on October 9, 2026, at Verde Hotel in Mtoni, Zanzibar, has brought together Chief Justices and delegates from more than 16 countries across Southern and Eastern Africa to discuss judicial reforms, digital case management and the strengthening of justice delivery systems.
The conference was officially opened by the Chairman of the Revolutionary Council and President of Zanzibar, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi.
According to THRDC Zanzibar, hosting the conference demonstrates the importance of strategic cooperation between stakeholders in the legal sector and the Judiciary in strengthening justice delivery systems.
In 2022, THRDC Zanzibar, in collaboration with the Zanzibar Judiciary, conducted a comprehensive assessment known as the Holistic Assessment of the Judiciary of Zanzibar. The assessment identified key priority areas requiring attention, including improving internal performance, accelerating the use of digital systems, and strengthening regional and international cooperation to enhance public trust and the efficiency of the Judiciary.
Speaking during the opening of the conference, THRDC Zanzibar Coordinator Suleiman Mujuni Baitani said the assessment laid a foundation for strengthening the Judiciary’s systems and provided recommendations for strategic improvements.
“The comprehensive assessment we jointly conducted in 2022, the Holistic Assessment of the Judiciary of Zanzibar, laid a strong foundation for strengthening our systems and provided recommendations for strategic improvements. Hosting SEACJF 2026 is among the outcomes of that work and clear evidence of the Judiciary’s genuine commitment to bringing about change,” Baitani said.
He added that the conference provides Zanzibar with an important opportunity to share its experience with judiciaries across the region, learn from others and further its efforts to improve access to justice for all citizens.
