THPS urged to strengthen primary healthcare

DAR ES SALAAM: THE government has urged the Tanzania Health Promotion Support (THPS) to strengthen integrated primary healthcare services and focus on vulnerable groups as the country works towards achieving the health goals of Vision 2050.

Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Prof Tumaini Nagu, made the call in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday during the launch of the THPS Strategic Plan III (2026–2030).

She said quality healthcare was among the major goals of Vision 2050 and that a healthy population was essential for achieving the country’s development targets.

“Providing quality health services to the people is one of the ten major goals of Vision 2050. The government recognises that without a healthy population it will not be able to achieve its goals,” she said.

Prof Nagu commended THPS for its 15 years of partnership with the government in strengthening integrated health services across the country.

She urged the organisation to focus more on regional and ward levels, align its interventions with Comprehensive Council Health Plans and use reliable data in planning and monitoring activities.

She also called for greater attention to vulnerable groups, particularly older people, women and children, while supporting efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goal Three on health and wellbeing.

THPS Executive Director Dr Redempta Mbatia thanked the government for its cooperation, saying the partnership had helped strengthen primary healthcare services, particularly in HIV, tuberculosis, noncommunicable diseases and mental health.

She said 42bn/- had been released to district councils and another 2bn/- to civil society organisations to support health projects.
