TGU, Lugalo guide Iringa delegation on golf course plans

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) and the Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) were honoured to welcome a special delegation from the Iringa region, representing the newly planned Mkwawa Golf Course, during a visit to Dar es Salaam.

The delegation was officially received at Lugalo Golf Club by Club Captain Major Japhet Masai, Club Treasurer Captain Mtuya and Johnson John, Coordinator of the Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) on Thursday.

“We had the pleasure of receiving a special delegation led by our respected elder Edmund Mkwawa, founder of the Mkwawa Golf Club,” said John.

“He was accompanied by Alfred Kinswaga and other representatives on behalf of the Iringa Municipal Council.” Mkwawa and Kinswaga, both senior golfers, are leading efforts to ensure the successful establishment and growth of golf in Iringa town.

“The purpose of their visit was to gain firsthand insights into the development of golf in Tanzania, as part of preparations for the construction of a new golf course in Iringa,” John added.

“We had a productive and engaging session at Lugalo, where the delegation learned about the club’s operations, the challenges and successes in promoting the sport and how the Lugalo Golf Course is managed,” he explained.

He said the visitors expressed deep appreciation for the knowledge and warm hospitality shared during their visit.

They also received basic training on the game of golf and discussed the sport’s broader social and economic value according to John.

“They were particularly impressed by the ongoing development efforts at Lugalo and expressed a strong commitment to collaborating with us going forward,” John noted.

“We sincerely thank our guests for honouring us with their visit and commend them for their strong commitment to promoting golf in Iringa. We are confident that this partnership will continue to grow and benefit golf development nationwide,” he added.

Major Masai also shared his excitement about the new project, expressing hope that golfers from across Tanzania will one day play at the upcoming Mkwawa Golf Course in Iringa.

The addition of the Mkwawa Golf Course will increase the number of golf courses in the country and provide a valuable new opportunity for Iringa residents to engage in the sport.

It will also become the second course in the region, following the Mufindi Golf Club.

Beyond sport, the new golf course is expected to contribute significantly to the regional tourism sector, positioning golf as both a recreational and economic asset for Iringa.
