TCRA trains students on proper use of social media

THE Tanzania Communication Regulatory Authority (TCRA) in Lake Zone has embarked on provision of social media education to students to help them avoid abuse of the services.
The Authority’s Zonal Manager, Engineer Francis Mihayo, made the revelation this week when addressing St Augustine University (SAUT)’s first year students.
“The abuse of social media network might lead you into violation of Cyber Crime Act of 2015. Understanding of social media education and its rules is also poor among students, because most of them have no access to smart phones and computers during their studies in primary and secondary school.
“The authority is responsible for strengthening public education, understanding and awareness of its services,” Mihayo said.
He further revealed that provision of social media education to students is a sustainable exercise and will be offered regularly in various tertiary learning institutions, in Lake Zone.
TCRA Zonal Principal, Engineer William Mnyippembe, advised students to reduce posting personal information on social media, as well as to avoid responding to messages on their email accounts, from unknown sources.
Mobile phone purchase should also be done only from authorized manufacturers, he said.
“Demand the receipt after the purchase and warranty that ensures your ownership,” he said.
He said the mobile number should also be registered with owner’s real names, so as to comply with the Electronic Communications and Postal Act (EPOCA) of 2010.
It was further noted that, Section 118 of EPOCA, as well as section 20 and 23 of the Cyber Crimes Act prohibit the transmission of repugnant and unsolicited messages.
SAUT Vice Chancellor (VC), Prof Costa Mahalu insisted the new comers to make good use of social media, for betterments of their studies and life in general.
The students should especially avoid pornographic pictures and provocative messages in social media, which consume much of their time, with no any benefits, said the VC.
“Make good use of social media, respect rules of the college and adhere to morals,” advised Prof Mahalu.
