DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) has sponsored four Tanzanian scholars to participate in the Pan African Mathematics Olympiads (PAMO) competition, taking place in Witwatersrand, South Africa.
A team of five mathematics experts departed from Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) in Dar es Salaam yesterday.
They will compete in the seven-day event, which runs from August 13 to 20, 2024.
TCRA Director General, Dr Jabiri Bakari expressed the authority’s commitment to advancing Information Technologies (ICTs) and digital skills in Tanzania.
He emphasised the importance of the fields in building a digitally- enabled nation.

Dr Bakari encouraged students and scholars to develop an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) as these subjects provide a solid foundation for ICT and digital competencies used in artificial intelligence and global systems applications.
He noted that participating in regional, continental and international competitions not only enhances professional skills but also enhances the country’s reputation on the global stage.
The Tanzanian scholars representing both the Mainland and Zanzibar are- Ambrose George Rutashobya from Iyunga Technical Secondary School, Ilham Abdalla Awadhi from Feza Secondary School, Zanzibar, Mwanaarab Said Mbwana from Lumumba Secondary School, Zanzibar, Stella Maliti from Marian Girls Secondary School and Zakaria Mwita from Azania Secondary School.
Chairman of the Mathematics Association of Tanzania (MAT) at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), Dr Said Sima said that the five scholars were selected from 812 students, who participated in a national Mathematics competition earlier this year.
At a colourful event held in Dar es Salaam yesterday, Patron of the UDSM Faculty of Mathematics, Dr Syvester Rugeihyamu expressed gratitude for TCRA’s support.
He mentioned the challenges faced in securing sponsorship, thanking TCRA for providing the return air tickets to and from South Africa.
Dr Rugeihyamu commended TCRA’s timely intervention and called on other organisations to follow TCRA’s example in supporting educational initiatives.
