THE Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) is keen on licensing more courier operators as the state-run agency sets its sight on formalising the service.
The regulators’ Principal Corporate Communications Officer, Mr Semu Mwakyanjala told a stakeholder’s gathering here yesterday that the authority has a database of at least 96 licensed courier companies across the country, as it lays emphasis on registering more.
“The government continues to urge those who are operating without licenses to quickly get registered, in a bid to enhance their accountability and trust on their clients,” insisted Mr Mwakyanjala, while addressing a section of stakeholders which comprised of passenger bus operators, local courier companies and officers from the Tanzania Posts Corporation.
According to the TCRA official, licensing of parcel and cargo transportation service providers was crucial and also assured of efficiency, safety, and integrity in the delivery of the services.
“While we are encouraged to do cross border trade, it is still important to put your trust on authorised courier companies, hence the need to register them with TCRA,” he added.
Mr Mwakyanjala’s assertion comes when the regulator has embarked on a four-month campaign that seeks to increase public awareness about licensed postal and cargo transportation services and their importance to social and economic development in the country.
In the region, the campaign is scheduled to be held at both, the Central Bus Station and the Kilombero Bus Stop.
On his part, TCRA’s Principal Officer, Mr Abel John, reminded registered courier companies to display their licenses on their walls.
“Much as it is important to protect your customers, such licenses need to visible before your potential clients,” he urged.
Mr John said it was sad to note that there were some individuals masquerading as courier companies who have been fleecing unsuspecting customers.
“A courier service can be a great way to save time and money as it provides you with a reliable way to get your parcels and documents delivered on time and in the same condition that they were sent,” he added.
