TCRA sees 8m Tanzanians benefit from 758 newly installed communication towers

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Minister for Information, Communication and Information Technology, Angellah Kairuki, has said the expansion of communication infrastructure continues to broaden access to telecommunications services for citizens across Tanzania.

Minister Kairuki made the remarks today, August 10, 2026, while presenting the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) Fourth Quarter Performance Report for the 2025/26 financial year.

She said the implementation of a project involving 758 communication towers, launched by President Samia Suluhu Hassan on April 10, 2026, has enabled telecommunications services to reach approximately eight million people across the country.

According to Minister Kairuki, the project was funded through the Universal Communications Service Access Fund (UCSAF) and implemented by the government through TCRA in collaboration with mobile network operators.

She said the project has benefited 1,400 villages across 26 regions of Mainland Tanzania, while 45 towers have been completed in Zanzibar.

“The expansion of communication infrastructure continues to broaden access to communication services for citizens, particularly in areas that previously faced challenges in accessing such services,” she said.

Minister Kairuki said the development has strengthened Tanzania’s position internationally in efforts to expand telecommunications services and promote the use of information and communication technologies.

She said that in June 2026, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) recognised Tanzania and presented it with a special award for the project, citing it as a model for expanding access to communication services.

She said the recognition demonstrates the impact of the government’s efforts to invest in digital infrastructure and ensure that citizens, including those in rural areas, have access to telecommunications services.

More broadly, the expansion of the infrastructure is expected to strengthen the foundation for digital services, e-commerce, digital payment systems and e-government services, particularly in areas that previously had limited connectivity.
