TBS seizes, destroys expired goods in Msomera

TANZANIA Bureau of Standards (TBS) has managed to remove expired products from the market in an effort to ensure protection of final users well-being remains a top priority.

The standard authority, conducted a successful inspections to various retail shops in Msomera village, Handeni District in the Tanga Region purposely to check on validity of products which led to the confiscation of number of expired products including beverages.

TBS also urged traders in the area to consider checking for product validity before purchase to enable them trade only-valid commodities to avoid losses during the inspection.

TBS’s Food Officer, Northern Zonal, Ms Mariam Maarufu said the standard watchdog is optimistic to remove low-quality standard products from markets including the expired ones to protect consumers well-being.

“We have managed to catch and destroy numerous products which were not valid for the basic use,” said Ms Maarufu after the inspection.

Additionally, “I urge you traders to remember checking the product validity before making the purchase to avoid losses occurring during inspections from TBS officers,”

Msomera village’s Chairman Mr Martine Paraketi commended TBS inspection motive which followed by the awareness training, claiming they two have come at the right time, right place.

“As a village leader, I commend the TBS for their efforts which proves to us that our well-being is at the safe hands,” said Mr Paraketi.

On his part, Mr Simon Kipondo, a trade at the area urged the authority to endeavor conduct more training classes to increase their understanding and be able to avoid buying low-quality products.

The Bureau was established as part of the efforts by the government to strengthen the supporting institutional infrastructure for the industry and commerce sectors of the economy.

Specifically, TBS is mandated to undertake measures for quality control of products of all descriptions and to promote standardisation in industry and commerce.
