DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) has received the Certificate of Excellence for Providing Product Quality Certification Services from the Southern African Development Community Accreditation Services (SADCAS), acknowledging its role in upholding standards across multiple production sectors.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Dr Hashil Abdallah, said in Dar es Salaam recently that this achievement demonstrates the government’s commitment to building a competitive and sustainable foundation, which can only be realised through high-quality products.

“Receiving the certificate from SADCAS signifies success on the international stage, proving that you have the capacity to verify product quality.

He added that the government will continue to strengthen partnerships with institutions and stakeholders to secure funding for managing quality control agencies.

“Additionally, through these efforts, the government has secured funding from Trademark Africa, enabling donors to help build the capacity of TBS staff to meet international standards,” he said.

He added, “This is a significant achievement for our government, as we have key stakeholders supporting our efforts to strengthen product quality management systems,”

He noted that these successes contribute to the country’s economic progress, as Tanzania has entered the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), that demands high-quality products and services. Therefore, quality is one of the key criteria for fully accessing this market and others.

“I urge traders and manufacturers in the country to utilize TBS to ensure that we sell products that meet international standards and are competitive in the market,” said Dr Abdallah.

Meanwhile, the Director-General of TBS, Dr Ashura Katunzi, mentioned that all nine of TBS’s laboratories have been certified and they now hold international accreditation.

“As of now, we have approximately 87 products produced globally that have been certified for quality by TBS and they can now carry the TBS quality mark for use within the country,” he added.

On her part, the SADCAS Chief Executive Officer, Ms Christine Gadzikwa, congratulated TBS for the significant achievement, acknowledging that this milestone was not an easy task.
