TAZARA announces temporary suspension of two train services

DAR ES SALAAM: The Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) has announced a temporary suspension of Kilimanjaro and Udzungwa train services between Dar es Salaam and Mbeya for 12 days.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, TAZARA attributed the suspension to multiple track closures caused by a series of incidents that have disrupted operations.

In an apology statement, the authority assured passengers that maintenance teams, engineers, and other stakeholders are working around the clock to restore the railway’s integrity, with normal services expected to resume by December 12, 2024.

“We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused by these disruptions and greatly appreciate your patience and understanding as we address these challenges,” the statement read.

The statement disclosed that over the past month, it has faced an unprecedented number of operational challenges, including more than ten incidents such as rail buckling, rail cutting, and derailments involving freight trains.

The authority described the situation as an operational crisis requiring immediate intervention.

“These events have necessitated the temporary closure of various sections of the railway line to facilitate urgent repairs,” the statement added.

The management asked passengers affected by the suspension to contact TAZARA’s customer service offices in Dar es Salaam, Mbeya and other intermediate stations for rescheduling or refund arrangements.

The authority reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and reliability of its services.
TAZARA also appealed for public understanding as it works to overcome the identified operational setbacks.
