Tanzania launches construction of a 74.65bn/- power project in Mtwara Region

NEWALA: THE Minister for Energy, Deogratius Ndejembi, has laid the foundation stone and officially inaugurated the construction of a 76-kilometre, 33-kilovolt power transmission line connecting the Masasi Switching Station to Newala District. The project has been implemented at a total cost of  4.65bn/-.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony held in Newala on July 21, 2026, Minister Ndejembi said the project forms part of the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s electricity infrastructure and ensure citizens have access to reliable and dependable power services.

The completion of the new transmission line is expected to improve the stability of the electricity distribution network across Mtwara Region and surrounding areas, reduce power supply challenges, and enhance the capacity of the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) to meet the growing electricity demand from households, businesses, and investors.

The launch ceremony was attended by senior government and Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) leaders, including Mtwara Regional Commissioner Colonel Donald Msengi, Permanent Secretary for Electricity and Renewable Energy at the Ministry of Energy, Engineer Felchesmi Mramba, TANESCO Managing Director Lazaro Twange, as well as officials and technical experts from the Ministry of Energy and its affiliated institutions.
