Tax collectors team up with taxpayers in promoting cooperation, peace, humanity

DODOMA: THE Tanzania Revenue Authority Workers Union (TAREWU) has held a solidarity walk aimed at strengthening relations between tax collectors and taxpayers, promoting understanding, peace, and cooperation in economic activities.

The event, held today , January 17, 2026, is a part of a three-day programme in Dodoma that includes the union’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), leadership elections, a blood donation drive, and a Fun Walk Marathon combined with a tax clinic.

Speaking during the walk, TAREWU National Chairman, Mr Lutufyo Mtafya, said the initiative brings revenue staff closer to taxpayers and ensures safe and peaceful work environments.

He said that the solidarity walk also aligned with the vision of the TRA Commissioner General, Mr Yusuph Juma Mwenda, who encourages staff to engage positively with taxpayers while ensuring fairness in revenue collection.

“The walk is intended to build solidarity. We believe that if a taxpayer thrives in their economic activities, TRA staff can operate securely and contribute to sustainable revenue collection,” Mr Mtafya said.

TAREWU held the walk in Dodoma as part of a three-day programme from January 15-17, 2026, coinciding with its Annual General Meeting (AGM). Activities included elections for new leaders, a blood donation drive, and a “Fun Walk Marathon” combined with a tax clinic.

Speaking on the marathon, National Women’s Committee Chairperson, Ms Jeniffer Melanie Mathias, said the activity aims to bring taxpayers closer to the union and educate them on proper tax practices.

“The blood donation and walkathon are ways for our members to give back to the community. As revenue collectors, we remain committed to working hand in hand with the public to ensure fair tax services,” she said.

Other leaders are Ms Jeniffer Melanie Mathias (National Women’s Committee Chairperson) and Ms Dorothy Msofu (Women’s Committee Secretary).

Union election overseer, Mr Tumaini Kichila, urged other institutions to respect democracy, freedom, and rights during leadership selection, warning that ignoring these principles could undermine peace between leaders and the public.
