Tanzania Sports Writers Association (TASWA) plans to reinstate the monthly best Tanzanian Sportsperson awards from July this year.
A statement issued on Tuesday by the association’s Secretary General, Alfred Lucas stated that the awards will be issued every month.
According to Lucas, the decision to restore the awards was made during the association’s Executive Committee meeting held on April 30, 2023.
“The award which will be contested in July, 2023 and the winner will be unveiled the following month, August 2023. This will involve all sportsmen whose games are recognized by the National Sports Council (BMT) in Tanzania and will also include Tanzanians who play outside of the country,” he said.
The SG added that, after finding a monthly winner for the whole 2023/2024 year, TASWA will organize the Best Tanzanian Sportsman Award gala whose overall winner will be picked from the monthly performers list.
“But then in those celebrations, TASWA will reward other sportsmen who have done well in all sports recognized by BMT, whose in the year 2023/2024 performed well both nationally and internationally deserve to be recognised,” he said.
The association’s secretary added that the responsibility of coordinating the monthly and annual awards will be managed by the TASWA newly formed Awards Committee, which will be unveiled soon.
In 2015 was the last time for TASWA to organize the event of which the guest of honour was the fourth phase President, Jakaya Kikwete.
