TANZANIA: DID you know that the Tanzania Social Action Fund (TASAF) is like the fairy godmother of rural communities, magically transforming lives with a sprinkle of infrastructure, cash and good advice? Well, it is true!
Through its various programmes, TASAF has been the unsung hero in improving health services, creating jobs and fostering self-reliance in some of the most underserved parts of Tanzania.
So, let us take a journey into the heart of TASAF’s impact, where we see lives transformed, communities uplifted and dreams coming true in the most unexpected ways. Let’s start with healthcare. Remember the days when your local clinic was little more than a tent? No? Well, some people in Tanzania do and they are singing praises for TASAF’s intervention.
Take the case of Makole Dispensary in Dodoma, where healthcare workers like Joyce Kimario have witnessed an incredible transformation. Joyce recalls how, before TASAF stepped in, the clinic was operating under a tent—yes, you read that right.
A tent. Now, thanks to TASAF’s generosity, the clinic is housed in a proper building, creating a more stable and conducive environment for patient care.
“We were using a tent to offer services, especially to children and pregnant women,” says Joyce.
“It rained often and the place would flood, making it impossible to work properly. TASAF built us this facility in 2020 and now we’re able to provide better services to our people.”
The new facility has been a game-changer, allowing staff to deliver quality care without the disruption of bad weather. But as with all great stories, there’s always room for improvement. Healthcare providers like Tumaini Mnyeule appreciate the upgrade but suggest adding a wall around the facility to offer more protection during the rainy season.

And you know what? TASAF has always been about continuous engagement, so no request goes unnoticed! Now, let’s talk about how TASAF isn’t just fixing roofs—it’s also building futures. Meet Christina Mazingo, a 45-year-old woman who received support from TASAF’s programme for households facing hardship.
Christina’s story is like a classic “rags to riches” tale, only the riches here come in the form of chickens, goats and a brick house. Christina’s journey began in 2008 when she received a modest 42,000/- from TASAF to kickstart her business.
With that small amount, she started raising chickens and selling them for a profit. Over time, she expanded her business by keeping goats and before long, her enterprise had grown.
“Through the income from my small business, I was able to buy a plot of land and even start building my own house,” she says proudly.
But Christina didn’t stop there. As her financial situation improved, she used the funds to send her children to school, and now her children are thriving in various stages of education—from Form Six to kindergarten.
The impact of TASAF didn’t just stop with Christina; it spread out into her community, creating jobs for others. She employs five young women at her restaurant, showing how one person’s success can ripple out to benefit others.
However, Christina has one piece of advice for TASAF: “It would be great if they could increase the amount of money slightly. Sometimes, the funds feel a bit small and without careful planning, it’s tough to stretch it.”
This feedback shows that while TASAF is doing wonders, there’s always room for more -more funds, more support, more change. But what ties all these successes together? It’s the holistic approach that TASAF takes in tackling poverty and building sustainable livelihoods.
The construction of healthcare facilities has directly contributed to better healthcare for rural Tanzanians, while the financial support for income-generating activities has empowered people like Christina to improve their economic status. Take the case of Makole again.
The Community Medical Supervisor (CMS) explains how the new facility has allowed them to serve a larger number of patients.
“We now serve many more people than we did before. People even come from neighbouring villages to receive services,” says the CMS.
This increased accessibility to healthcare is a win for everyone. The ripple effect of TASAF’s work is undeniable. By improving healthcare facilities and providing cash support for income-generating activities, the programme helps communities break the cycle of poverty.
And the best part? It’s a long-term solution, not a quick fix. Communities are now empowered to improve their own lives, and they’re doing so with pride and dignity. So, how does TASAF manage to do all this? Well, it’s like this: TASAF brings the right ingredients—healthcare, financial support and education—and mixes them together into a recipe for success.
It’s not just about handing out money or building a new clinic; it’s about creating a system where communities can thrive on their own, long after the initial support. Just look at the impact on rural communities. In many areas, people now have access to healthcare that was previously out of reach.
They also have the opportunity to improve their economic status through small businesses, thanks to the financial support they receive. And because TASAF also emphasises the importance of education and skill-building, the future looks brighter for many Tanzanians.
TASAF’s programme has become a lifeline for thousands of families who would otherwise remain trapped in poverty. From healthcare improvements to job creation and financial empowerment, the programme is setting the stage for a more prosperous Tanzania.
But while TASAF has been busy transforming lives, it’s important to remember that success is a team effort.
Communities need to continue participating, providing feedback and using the resources wisely. And the government? Well, it’s clear that TASAF’s initiatives are a key part of Tanzania’s longterm development strategy, and continued support will be crucial for future progress.
In conclusion, TASAF has been an unsung hero in Tanzania’s fight against poverty and its quest for sustainable development. The improvements in healthcare infrastructure, the financial empowerment of individuals, and the broader economic impact are proof that when resources are combined with a vision for lasting change, incredible things happen.
TASAF’s work in Tanzania is far from over. As more people are reached and more communities transformed, we can expect the ripple effects to spread even further. From Makole to the farthest corners of the country, TASAF is helping Tanzanians build healthier, wealthier futures.
So, here’s to TASAF the fairy godmother of rural development whose magic touch continues to change lives, one brick, one chicken and one patient at a time. The future looks bright and with TASAF leading the way, it’s only going to get brighter.
