TARURA sets 22bn/- budget for road construction in Ruvuma

SONGEA: THE Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA) in the Ruvuma region has continued to benefit from the government’s significant investment in road infrastructure, a move that is driving economic development, agriculture, and environmental conservation.
The TARURA manager in Ruvuma, Engineer Silvester Chinengo, said for the 2025/2026 financial year, the region is implementing development projects with a budget of 22bn/-, a significant increase from the previous 7bn/-.

“Currently, TARURA Ruvuma manages a road network of 7,147 kilometers, of which 133.69 kilometers are asphalt, 1,651.8 kilometers are gravel, and 5,360.6 kilometers are dirt.
He said about 70 percent of these roads are passable all season, which has brought positive changes to farmers and traders in the region.
“These roads have been a savior for farmers. Crops like maize and coffee now reach the market on time, without being damaged on the way, thereby increasing the economy of farmers,” said Engineer Chinengo.

In addition, the Manager said TARURA has procured 43 contracts worth 12.1bn/-, and is in the final stages of signing the contracts.
He added that in the past year alone, more than 3 kilometers of asphalt roads have been built, and street lights have been installed to increase safety and visibility of the city at night.

“Currently, every road that is built is accompanied by the installation of lights, a measure that increases safety and stimulates economic activities, especially at night.
In protecting the environment, Engineer Chinengo has urged citizens not to throw waste into water channels and to participate in the maintenance of infrastructure.

“The government has invested a lot of money and it is our responsibility to ensure that these roads last for a long time by avoiding deliberate damage,” he stressed.
Eva Ndomba, a resident of Makambi, said that previously the roads were covered in grass, dust, and even motorcycles had a hard time passing, but they are grateful to the Government for the construction of asphalt roads as they are passing well and the installation of lights has helped them, now they are doing business even at night.
