TANGA: THE Tanzanian government has successfully sold a total of 450,000 tonnes of agricultural produce through the Warehouse Receipt System in 2023/2024 financial year, generating revenue amounting to 1.2tri/-.
However, in the following season, those sales increased significantly, reaching between 800,000 and 1,000,000 tonnes. This surge enabled the government to collect revenue of up to 2.9tri/-, an increase of 142 percent.
This was revealed today, April 11, 2025, by the Minister for Industry and Trade, Mr Suleiman Jafo, while opening a meeting of the Warehouse Receipt System Supervisory Board held in Tanga region.
“The warehouse receipt system helps farmers to improve their economic status and also enables the government to collect revenue through formal sales of produce stored in warehouses,” said Minister Jafo.

He further noted that the system has enhanced transparency, discipline, and efficiency in agricultural trade while also benefiting farmers by allowing them to receive competitive prices through market bidding.
According to Minister Jafo, these achievements have also enabled various local government authorities to increase their revenues from 36bn/- to 87bn/-, a development that is boosting social and economic growth at the community level.
“This system is a major catalyst for the development of the agricultural and trade sectors,” emphasized Minister Jafo.
